The BiPAP S/T Mode machine is a Bi-level positive airway pressure machine with a special mode called the Spontaneous and Timed mode. Like any standard BiPAP machine, this machine mode also extends two different pressures for respiratory, including the IPAP for inhalation and EPAP for exhalation. The Spontaneous setting on the machine denotes that IPAP pressure on the machine will be initiated upon detection of a spontaneous or active effort of inhalation from the user. Gradually the pressure will decrease to its set EPAP settings to aid in exhalation.
Additionally, the BiPAP S/T Mode also has a distinct setting called the Timed mode. In timed mode, both the IPAP for inspiration and EPAP for expiration can be controlled to automatically transition according to a pre-set rate, typically expressed in breaths per minute (BPM). Like spontaneous mode, the machine will continue to respond to any inspiratory trigger and modify pressures accordingly. However, through the timed mode, it will also provide an additional "backup" breathing rate to ensure that the user continues to receive a minimum number of breaths per minute even if they fail to breathe spontaneously.
